Where Royalty Once Healed: Finding Wellness in Mariánské Lázně

Healing waters, royal history, and the soul of Mariánské Lázně

After a peaceful 2.5-hour train ride from Prague, I arrived in the spa town of Mariánské Lázně—a place that feels like it was built to slow you down and bring you back to yourself.

A car service met me at the station and swept me up the hill to Nové Lázně, one of the most storied spa hotels in the Czech Republic. As I stepped onto the red carpet at the entrance, it felt like crossing a threshold—into a space where healing is sacred and time moves differently. The grand facade and sweeping staircases offered a regal welcome, but what awaited inside was even more transformative.

My stay was hosted by Ensana Health Spa Hotels, a leader in medical and wellness tourism across Europe. Ensana is deeply rooted in the tradition of therapeutic spa culture and is helping preserve the legacy of natural healing by offering scientifically backed treatments powered by the region’s mineral waters, CO₂-rich springs, and expert care. Their properties—especially in Mariánské Lázně—are designed for true restoration of body and spirit.

Nové Lázně is part of a connected complex of five historic spa hotels, each designed with one purpose in mind: to support the healing journey through the mineral-rich waters of Mariánské Lázně. These waters—high in naturally occurring carbon dioxide—have been used for centuries to treat everything from circulatory issues to post-surgery recovery. And yes, doctors still prescribe the “taking of the waters” as part of a holistic treatment plan. It’s a living wellness tradition, not a relic of the past.

The tour began in the King’s Suite, built for King Edward VII of England, who made regular pilgrimages here. The ornate design—centering around a soaking tub that once served royalty—was a powerful reminder: these waters have long been revered not just for their beauty, but for their ability to restore the body and spirit.

We moved through the treatment halls, where I saw rooms for mud wraps, CO₂ baths, inhalation therapy, lymphatic drainage, physical rehabilitation, and even cryotherapy. The onsite doctor explained how CO₂ baths work: the gas seeps into the skin, improving circulation, reducing inflammation, and calming the nervous system. As someone always in motion, I felt my body say, “Yes, please.”

And then it was my turn.

I slipped into a CO₂ bath—bubbling with gentle fizz—and within minutes, I was deeply relaxed, nearly asleep. From there, I wandered through the spa’s wellness circuit: dry and steam saunas, Kneipp hydrotherapy (alternating hot and cold foot baths to stimulate blood flow and ground the body), whirlpools, and finally, the stunning Roman Bath, filled with warm mineral water and bathed in natural light. I felt as if I had floated out of time.

Afterward, I enjoyed a nourishing dinner from their healthy buffet—light, seasonal food that mirrored the restorative energy of the day.

The next morning, I explored the town itself. Mariánské Lázně is more than its spa—it’s an entire ecosystem of wellness. Elegant colonnades, forested walking paths, the sound of the Singing Fountain echoing through the square… this is a place where nature, culture, and healing move together in harmony. As the European Historic Thermal Towns remind us, spa culture is as much about beauty, art, music, and community as it is about treatments.

There’s a rhythm here that invites presence. To sit. To breathe. To connect.

Though my stay was brief, it left a lasting impression. Before I knew it, I was boarding a train back to Prague, carrying the calm with me—onward to our next destination: Budapest, the spa capital of the world.
